A local laborer now has a school named after him. The Rochester City School District released the name of its new construction
school Thursday at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
The Robert Brown School of Construction and Design
is scheduled to open next fall, replacing the Edison School of Applied Technology.
Business Manager of Laborers
Local 435 Bob Brown has been called an unsung hero in Rochester's construction industry.
He has already helped
many inner-city students begin their careers in construction trades, and he has big plans for the future.
"When
they go through our program we will get them a job. A job to a young girl or boy who comes back into the community to live
means a big thing to most of the community to have it done that way and I think if we get it started there's no end in
sight," said Brown.
The school will inherit the House Building Project started by Brown two years ago with
the RCSD and Edison High School.
Within days of the inauguration, the new leadership at the Labor Department moved to delay implementing a regulation finalized
in January that would have shed much needed light on how union managers compensate themselves with union dues.

than most. But we cannot go backwards, lowering standards and degrading the foundation of the American Dream. Working people
and good jobs built our economy and they are the key to our economic recovery. read full article

LIUNA Local 91 has changed tactics since some of its members were convicted last year on federal racketeering charges
for intimidation at non-union work sites. The union has sworn off physical threats. Now, it’s using a 10-foot inflatable
rat to send a message to non-union workers and contractors — a message some of the targets say is an unsubtle hint of
Local 91’s history of violence.
